Oh my did I have fun with SD’s bedroom. She was a little distraught over leaving her room in our last house 3 years ago, so I promised her an extra special little room just for her. I kinda want this room 🙂
First step: paint this room her dream color. She got to pick, I only steered her a little bit 🙂 I painted the room before we moved any furniture in, which made it a lot easier. I only taped the windows and then used an edger to do everything else (around the closet and the ceiling edge).
SD took this one, she was so excited the color was going up.
Here you can see how well this paint covers after only one coat. I only really had to touch up where I hadn’t pressed hard enough.
I found all of her furniture either on Craigslist or from someone who was getting rid of it for free. I got her night stand for $30 on Craigslist; it was a Pottery Barn piece, but it was a glossy blue. White glossy paint to the rescue. Her desk is two pieces, and I got it for $50. I painted it glossy white and put flower decals on the back of the bookshelves and sides. I also did a fun flower contact paper on the bottom of the drawers. The drawer pulls came with the piece! The chair was free from a neighbor getting rid of it. I painted it glossy pink to match the back of the book shelf and dresser and then added the flower details with paint. In hindsight, I should have either roughed it up by sanding it, or used chalk paint, since it is peeling in some spots. Oh well, it has lasted 4 years so far.
The canopy was a piece of pink organza from the thrift store (see similar here, with options for the blue and purple in the reading corner as well). I bought three 18″ wooden towel racks, and installed one on the ceiling and one on each side. I used some 3M clips to hold the fabric on the racks, though it does need adjusting from time to time.
This is a special little reading spot. The organza fabric: I just doubled it up, hemmed it, stitched it up at the top and put it on a shower rod that I installed into the ceiling. Get the purple organza here and the blue here. Installing was a bit tricky with the fabric on it, but oh well. I added the flags, just cut some triangles out of left over fabric from her quilt and stitched them onto some cording. The fabric down the middle was also left over from the quilt, and I stitched it on to hold the two pieces together. At the split, I attached ribbon loops and put them on to 3M hooks on the wall, I just had to hook them on and then eye-balled it as far as where to put the hooks. Inside, she can snuggle with the pillow her grandma made her and a book.
I thought you’d want to see her closet…I had just organized it with her before taking this photo. She loves to collect stuffed animals, and this closet has such a great amount of storage.
Here’s her dresser. Again, a freebie from a neighbor. I painted it pink, used a peanut butter can lid to trace circles for the flowers, painted them on, and then added the contact paper to the top. I did attach both this dresser and her desk to the wall with L-brackets for safety.
SD made the artwork herself, and I love her positive Christ-centered attitude. This girl is a blessing.
This hair stylin’ area is a fairly new addition. She needed a spot to hold all her hair stuff, and this little set of baskets keeps it from taking up room–it is behind her door. I found the baskets and mirror at Hobby Lobby.
Here is her quilt. I made this for her when she was 5, and she still loves it and so do I! I had bought the fabric years before to make a purple-y star-and-moon quilt that never happened. I had so much fun putting love into this quilt for her.
Her bed was another Craiglist find. I spray-painted it white, and then added some glitter with spray paint on the head and foot. It comes off at times, but lots of fun.
Here is a close-up of the quilt’s edge.
The back of the quilt was just extra pieces of the same fabric that I pieced together to make the right size.
Hope you enjoyed this little tour of SD’s room 🙂
